WoodmenLife is committed to offering training to Representatives to help them grow and have the tools they need to best serve our members. Qualifying new full-time Representatives are invited to Sure Start, which helps them kick off their careers with WoodmenLife. During the 12 months following their Sure Start training, these Representatives have a friendly competition with their classmates to see how well they put their lessons into action.
Get to know our June 2024 Sure Start Winner: Josh Mashburn of Blairsville, GA.
Congratulations on your Sure Start victory! How did you celebrate?
I was recognized at a local sales conference and went on a mountain bike ride. I will also celebrate with a prime rib dinner.
What inspired you to choose a career with WoodmenLife?
I have been a WoodmenLife member since I was 5 years old. I always knew that WoodmenLife was involved in communities, but it wasn’t until I became a Sales Representative that I found out how much time you could really spend giving back to your community. I think that is a powerful realization that we all share as WoodmenLife Representatives, and that continually inspires me to try to do more.
Have you always wanted to pursue a career in sales?
Not necessarily. Much of my working life after graduating from college with a business degree was spent working outdoors — whether it was making snow on the ski slopes of Colorado or operating heavy equipment in Georgia. I didn’t ever really see myself in sales as a career. Honestly, I still don’t consider myself a salesman. Ultimately, I just want to help people, create financial clarity and build relationships that last a lifetime.
What drives you to deliver great service for your members?
I believe that if you take the time to sit down with people and explain the product they already have or the product they might need, then people will appreciate you and what you do. People are busy, and it can be difficult to get them to slow down. But what drives me to help people is the need for what we do: protecting families’ financial futures. Our members and future members need someone to take the time and show that they care.
Tell us a little about how you’re involved in your community. Why is community outreach so important to you?
I am involved as a Chamber Ambassador for our county, as well as being a part of our county’s Leadership Union committee. I also help with chapter events, present flags and scholarships, am active in my church community, and enjoy participating in Giving Together projects.
Do you have a particularly memorable moment from your time so far with WoodmenLife?
I vividly remember handling my first death claim and how impactful that was to me. Seeing a widow be grateful and broken at the same time gives you a new perspective on life. It truly showed me that what we do as an organization and as Sales Representatives matters.
What are your goals for the future?
My goals for the future include having a spectacular time in Italy in July for the 2024 Incentive Trip that WoodmenLife offers to the top sellers. I also plan to complete my securities license by the end of 2024, which will give me additional tools to serve our members. Another goal is becoming more knowledgeable about this industry so that I can more effectively educate and help the people in my community. Also, becoming a Top Hat winner (WoodmenLife’s most prestigious Sales recognition) would not be so bad either.
