WoodmenLife is committed to offering training to our Sales Representatives to help them grow and have the tools they need to best serve our members. Qualifying new full-time Representatives are invited to Sure Start, an interactive training event that helps them kick off their careers with WoodmenLife. During the 12 months following their Sure Start education, these Representatives have a friendly competition with their classmates to see how well they put their lessons into action and compare their sales achievements.

Get to know our September 2024 Sure Start Winner: Rebecca Corkern of Zachary, LA.

Congratulations on your Sure Start victory! How did you celebrate?

I am still celebrating! This reward was a huge bonus and an incentive to work harder and help more people.

What inspired you to choose a career with WoodmenLife?

I wanted to work for an organization that gives back to the community. Plus, WoodmenLife has great incentives, rewards and benefits. At every team meeting, we say the Pledge of Allegiance, which shows our commitment to our country. We have flexible hours that allow me to be with my family, and I have been able to work from home when the need arises. And what great leadership! After our first meeting, I knew I was in the right place.

Have you always wanted to pursue a career in sales?

Yes! I initially went into nursing, but was always doing something involving sales on the side. So, I left the medical field and went into sales full time, and it has been very rewarding.

What drives you to deliver great service for your members?

My commitment to helping people with honesty and integrity. For me, it is not about the sale — it is about doing the right thing and treating people the way you would like to be treated.

What does success look like to you?

Success to me is making a positive impact to the world around me. When my phone rings or I get a text, and the person says, “I got your name from …” — that’s the best feeling ever. When you do such a great job serving your members that they refer other people to you, then you know you really made a difference. It makes my heart smile!

Tell us a little about how you’re involved in your community. Why is community outreach so important to you?

I belong to my local chamber of commerce, the Garden Club, Women’s Council, and the Quilting Club. I try to always give and help in the community, and at community events and fundraisers. I also always participate in WoodmenLife’s Giving Together program.

Do you have a particularly memorable moment from your time so far with WoodmenLife?

I have many, but one in particular comes to mind:

One of my members had passed away. I called WoodmenLife Customer Service, and they said they were having trouble finding a beneficiary. The member’s father had passed away before him, and WoodmenLife couldn’t find the other person listed on the life insurance certificate. So, I got to work. I searched for the member’s obituary online, but couldn’t find one. I then searched on social media for other family members. I ended up finding the member’s mother — she was listed on the certificate as a beneficiary, but she had remarried and changed her name since the certificate was issued, which is why Customer Service struggled to find her. I drove to her house, introduced myself and confirmed that she was the member’s mother. She emotionally told me about his passing and how she didn’t have enough money for his burial — a family member had generously stepped up to pay to have him cremated. She said they only put his obituary information on Facebook because they couldn’t afford an obituary in the newspaper. I held back tears as I told her that her son had a life insurance policy and that she was the beneficiary. She was relieved that she would be able to pay back the family member who had covered his cremation. We filled out the paperwork and sent it in. She later called me back to thank me for the work I put into finding her. She had gotten the life insurance check and she wanted to learn more about WoodmenLife.

What are your goals for the future?

My goal is to get across to people that the peace of mind that comes with life insurance protection is affordable. I plan to have my neighborhood and surrounding areas covered and give them peace of mind for both the inevitable and unexpected.
