WoodmenLife Senior Days give members age 55 and older a chance to spend time together, have fun — and try something a little different.
In May, members traveled to Fredericksburg, TX, for a two-day event centered around music, dancing, and time together in charming Hill Country.
On May 14 and 15, the group gathered for an overnight stay and spent time in one of the area’s best-known spots.
“We hosted Senior Days in Fredericksburg and rented out the Luckenbach dance hall for the group,” said Vanessa Dean, Community Outreach Advisor in Texas West. Luckenbach is a town just outside of Fredericksburg and is considered a country music mecca.
The day started with a storyteller who shared the history of the town. From there, things shifted into something more active.
“We brought in Texas Two-Step lessons and then just let it turn into an afternoon of music and dancing,” Dean said.
People had time to learn at their own pace, then stayed on the floor once the music picked up.

The event was built around an activity many people already knew.
“The goal was to tap into what people enjoy doing in retirement,” Dean said. “Things that are social, nostalgic, and local.”
For this group, that meant leaning into a big part of Texas culture.
“Dance halls and Two-Step are part of Texas,” she said. “A lot of people grew up around that.”
Because of that, the day felt easy to step into.

The turnout was strong, but what stood out most was how people took part.
“It was phenomenal,” Dean said. “The turnout and engagement exceeded what we expected.”
Once the music started, people joined in.
“I was surprised in the best way by how many people jumped in,” she said.
Some people already knew the steps. Others learned as they went. Either way, the dance floor stayed full.
“The weather was beautiful, and everyone had so much energy,” Dean said. “People were moving, talking, and just enjoying being together.
“It really felt like people were dancing their hearts out.”

The historic setting helped, but it was not the only reason the event worked.
People spent time together. They talked, laughed, and stayed connected throughout the day. For some, it was something new — for others, it was something they had not done in a while.
That mix made it feel comfortable.
WoodmenLife Senior Days gives members space to show up, take part, and enjoy time together without pressure.
And sometimes, that is all it needs to be.
