Sometimes we make choices that don’t seem like a big deal at the time, but later turn out to be very important. For Jessica Miller of La Grange, NC, buying life insurance with her husband, Kyle, in 2012 was one of those choices. That simple decision later helped her through the hardest time in her life.
Jessica and Kyle grew up in the same town. They started dating a little after high school and got married in 2011. Like many newlyweds, they were saving money for a house and planning to start a family someday.
“We were young and healthy,” Jessica said. “We weren’t even thinking about life insurance until someone from WoodmenLife talked to us about it.”
That person was Jared Edwards, their WoodmenLife Representative who had also grown up with both of them. When Edwards explained how life insurance could help protect their financial future, the couple decided to sign up.
“It didn’t cost much each month,” Jessica explained. “We just thought it was the smart thing to do as a married couple.”
A few years later, Jessica and Kyle were happy with their growing family. They had a 16-month-old daughter named Kailey.
Then, in late 2015, Kyle got a bad cough that wouldn’t go away. After weeks of being sick, Jessica took him to the hospital in Greenville, NC.
“I thought he’d get some medicine and we’d go home,” Jessica remembered. “Instead, they kept him in the hospital with pneumonia in both lungs.”
Two days later, the doctors found something worse: Kyle had a fast-moving type of leukemia. Just two weeks after that, Kyle passed away, leaving Jessica and their baby girl.

Jessica and Kyle got married in 2011, and a couple years later they had a daughter named Kailey.
While dealing with her grief, Jessica also faced serious questions: How would she pay the bills? Would she need to go back to work right away?
“That’s when I truly understood why we bought life insurance,” Jessica said. “During the saddest time in my life, I didn’t have to worry about money.”
The money from Kyle’s life insurance meant Jessica could take time off work, pay their rent, and even start a college fund for Kailey.
“Life insurance didn’t make losing Kyle any less painful,” Jessica said. “But it did take away the stress of wondering how we would get by.”
Today, Jessica has found love again and remarried. She still values the lessons she learned about protecting the people you love.
“I’m so thankful we made that choice years ago,” Jessica said. “Kyle’s last gift to us was making sure we would be OK money-wise.”
Jessica is still a WoodmenLife member and has made sure her new family is protected, too. She often tells friends to not put off getting life insurance.
“No one expects bad things to happen,” she said. “But having that protection gave me peace when I needed it most.”
For Jessica, buying life insurance can be a way to show love for your family by making sure they’ll be taken care of after you’re gone.
“It can be one of the most important ways to say ‘I love you’ to your family,” Jessica said. “I’m grateful every day that Kyle and I chose WoodmenLife to help protect our future.”
