Life is a beautiful journey, but it’s also full of uncertainties. That’s why life insurance matters.
We all want to ensure that our loved ones are taken care of, not just while we’re here, but also when we’re gone. WoodmenLife member Jennifer Candelaria Tomlin took that message to heart when she sought to protect the financial futures of those closest to her.
She purchased Family Term life insurance to cover her, her husband and their 9-year-old daughter with one certificate1.
With a Family Term life insurance certificate, if either adult passes away2, all coverage continues on the surviving insured adult and on any eligible children. And no additional premiums are required.
“I have peace of mind that my husband and daughter will not have to be burdened with losing an entire income right away,” said Candelaria Tomlin, 33. “When that time comes, my husband will have time to figure things out, and my daughter will hopefully be old enough to use some of that money to help pay for her education, a down payment on a home, a new vehicle, travel, or whatever she needs at the time.
“For me, it’s not about the amount of money they receive. It’s that they’ll know I loved them enough while I was alive to still care for them after my death.”
The importance of life insurance was made clear for Candelaria Tomlin when her father passed away in a car accident. His life insurance helped with his final arrangements and supported Candelaria Tomlin’s mother, who would’ve struggled on a single income. The death benefit allowed her mom to leave her rental and build a small home on another daughter’s property.
“She goes on without my father,” Candelaria Tomlin said, “but this scenario made me consider my daughter, and how I do not want to leave her any financial burdens if the day comes where she has to mourn the death of myself, my husband or potentially both.”
Candelaria Tomlin knows her story shows why life insurance matters. It’s about alleviating a financial burden during a time of emotional turmoil.
“Life insurance is not a luxury, but a necessity,” Candelaria Tomlin emphasized.
She added that talking about life insurance and death can be uncomfortable, but it’s even more uncomfortable to wonder about finances while trying to get through “some of the hardest days of your life.”
Don’t be afraid to ask yourself hard questions, she said, like, “Would paying bills be a problem going forward?” If your answer is, “Yes,” then Candelaria Tomlin recommends purchasing life insurance.
