Here’s a sobering statistic: According to the 2022 Life Insurance Barometer Study, 44% of respondents said they would feel the financial burden of losing the household’s primary wage earner in less than six months. Either these households have no life insurance protection or they don’t have enough.
“There are still over 100 million people in this country who don’t own enough life insurance” said David Levenson, president and CEO of LIMRA and LOMA, a sponsor of the study.
That means more than one-quarter of the country is lacking in life insurance protection. And that can be devastating.
Take it from Flocerpida “Aida” Holden, 70, of Imperial Beach, CA. When she finally convinced her husband to purchase life insurance 20-plus years ago, he was too sick to get the coverage he wanted. When he died, she struggled to cover expenses without any life insurance proceeds.
Lucky for her, one of her oldest friends was a WoodmenLife Representative. That Representative, Juanita Macaranas-Kelly, 64, had suffered a medical emergency a decade earlier, and she had promised then that if she survived, she’d strive to help people.
Holden was one of those people. Macaranas-Kelly, of La Mesa, CA, saw a friend in need, and Holden knew she had to do something for her family — she didn’t want to leave them having to cover expenses as she did years ago.
Macaranas-Kelly promises that she treats all her clients the same. But, she said, after suffering a health crisis herself, she had extra motivation to help Holden.
“Sometimes, it’s hard to sell to your friends,” Macaranas-Kelly said. “I told her, ‘What happened with your husband could happen again. Please do it to make sure your kids and grandkids have life insurance protection.’”
Holden saw the value of life insurance after talking with Macaranas-Kelly.
“It was important to me,” Holden said. “I did not want what happened to me to happen to my kids.”
So, the mother of two and grandmother of five purchased multiple life insurance certificates to help protect the financial futures of her family members.
Holden purchased a whole life certificate for herself, one that at her age she could still obtain to help protect her loved ones. And she covered a daughter and four grandchildren with My Choice IUL® certificates, because she wanted them to have the potential for cash value growth1. (Another daughter and a grandson had coverage on their own.)
“Life is short,” Holden said. “This helps provide peace of mind. This is for the future.”
She looked to Macaranas-Kelly for guidance through the process. As her Representative, her friend made sure Holden found life insurance protection with the benefits she was looking for, at a price she could afford.
Ensuring that members’ budgets and needs align is the primary approach Macaranas-Kelly employs. She wants to give them the comfort of knowing that what they’re purchasing suits their situation, and that they can manage the cost. She also wants them to know that they’re dealing with a stable company.
“I tell them how WoodmenLife has been around since 1890. We aren’t going anywhere, and we’re financially strong,” Macaranas-Kelly said.
Members also like hearing about the WoodmenLife Extras2. For Holden, a notable perk of choosing WoodmenLife was Life’s Perks®3. She called the member discount program a “help for my budget.”
Ultimately, Macaranas-Kelly emphasizes that life insurance is like paying it forward to your descendants. That’s because life insurance may be the best way to provide financial security for your loved ones after you’re gone. It can help relieve financial burdens your family may face, such as funeral costs, mortgages and college expenses.
“Life insurance isn’t for the dying,” she said. “It’s for the living. You don’t want to leave challenges behind for your family.”
Her message is one of compassion, driven by her oath after her health scare.
“I said, ‘If I get a second chance, I’m going to make a difference in people’s lives,’” Macaranas-Kelly said. “And you know what? Life insurance may be the best way to do that.”
She calls her process an education. She wants her members to learn about life insurance protection and understand how their purchase provides the right solution for them.
