WoodmenLife is committed to offering training to Representatives to help them grow and have the tools they need to best serve our members. Qualifying new full-time Representatives are invited to Sure Start, which helps them kick off their careers with WoodmenLife. During the 12 months following their Sure Start training, these Representatives have a friendly competition with their classmates to see how well they put their lessons into action.

Congratulations on your Sure Start victory! How are you going to celebrate?
What an honor! I was at the Home Office in Omaha, NE, when I found out that I had earned this victory. During my training, I celebrated and shared with Representatives from across the nation about my successful first year at WoodmenLife. Reflecting on my accomplishments and goals that I set, I see that my commitment to give everything 100% has paid off.
Have you always wanted to pursue a career in sales?
I retired from the Texas Department of Transportation after having worked there for 33 years, the last 15 of which I was in management. I have always worked in roadway construction, and I wanted to try something totally different. My goal was to find a position that was flexible, fun and involved helping people. I wanted something that was intertwined with people and the community. I saw a post on Facebook advertising a position for an insurance representative, so I made contact and asked some questions. Over the next couple of days, I went in to discuss options and to see what WoodmenLife was all about. I was interviewed and left knowing that this position included everything that I had hoped for. I thought about it for a couple of days and knew this was it. Although I had never had a job in sales, I kept reminding myself that I was looking for something totally different. I started on Feb. 1, 2023, and knew this was a position I would love. After passing my insurance license test, I realized that this opportunity was put in my path for a reason — and that reason was to help people with their financial planning. Here I am, a year later, speaking with and helping clients every day. I consider it all a blessing.
What drives you to deliver great service for your members?
Every day brings me joy as I contribute to a client’s future planning. My daily goal is to help people, earn their trust and ensure that my guidance aligns with their best interests and budget.
What does success look like to you?
Success to me means taking on new challenges and expanding my horizons. It is about learning, growing and seeking out new opportunities that can help me broaden my skills and experience. Success is about being flexible and adaptable and being willing to take risks and try new things while pursuing my goals.
Tell us a little about how you’re involved in your community. Why is community outreach so important to you?
I love working with WoodmenLife chapters, as well as with other community outreach opportunities. I work with the local Scout group and am a member of the local Kiwanis Club. One of my passions has always been to help the youth of the community. In the past, I served as the Treasurer at the local county livestock show, helping to coordinate and organize the show with over 1,000 entries. I have served as a 4-H Leader for 15-plus years. As a leader with these groups, I can help the youth discover more about themselves, grow as communicators, build relationships with others, learn new skills, make good decisions, and manage projects.
Community outreach is important because it can increase awareness of WoodmenLife and what we do. It also builds trust and credibility, and it can spur conversations that lead to helping more families protect their financial futures.
Do you have a particularly memorable moment from your time so far with WoodmenLife?
I have had several memorable moments. One of my first was meeting with a 30-year-old woman. I conducted a needs analysis to help her determine the best solution for her situation. I explained how the life insurance product works and why it would be a good option for her. This woman recognized the need for life insurance at a young age after witnessing friends and family struggle following the loss of a loved one. She sought coverage to handle final expenses and other financial needs. Visiting this client reaffirmed my decision to become a part of the WoodmenLife family.
What are your goals for the future?
One of my most important goals is to continue to gain more knowledge about financial planning so I can help clients plan their financial futures. I want to be the representative clients remember as someone who simply wanted to help them and gain their trust, while also helping them prepare for their futures and the futures of their families.
