There’s nothing quite like Texas hospitality. This past year, members attending WoodmenLife’s Annual Regional Event (ARE) in the Texas Southeast region showed that hospitality with their thoughtful breakfast bags initiative for Veterans.
The community service project touched the lives of 500 Veterans, combining WoodmenLife’s National Community Focus of fighting hunger with honoring those who served. The event brought together volunteers to share a true Texan experience of generosity.
“We partnered with Meals on Wheels Montgomery County to provide breakfast bags for homebound senior Veterans,” said Kaysi Bell, Texas Southeast Community Outreach Advisor. “The bags were filled with shelf-stable goodies like granola bars, dry granola packets, juice boxes, and various breakfast bars.”
But it wasn’t just about the food. WoodmenLife members added a personal touch that made the project truly special.
“We had white sandwich bags that our members could decorate at the event,” Bell said. “They wrote inspirational messages like ‘Have a great day’ and ‘You’re amazing.’ It was a wonderful way to connect with our Veterans.”

The project was a massive undertaking, with the team putting together 500 breakfast bags and making an additional $10,000 donation to Meals on Wheels Montgomery County.
Bell said that the project was a success with WoodmenLife members, too.
“Our members loved it,” she said. “Combining our shared commitments of fighting hunger and supporting Veterans really resonated with everyone involved.”
The initiative was about more than giving — it was also about learning and growing as a community. When the team of volunteers delivered the donation, Meals on Wheels gave them a tour of its facilities.
“They showed us the inner workings of what they do,” Bell said. “It helped build ideas for future projects.
“We’ve supported fighting hunger since 2015,” she said. “But in the past few years, we’ve tried to include other groups. This was a way to tie in more than one of our shared commitments.”
Every breakfast bag was carefully prepared, ensuring that each Veteran would receive not just nutrition, but also a special message of appreciation. The event held nothing back when it came to showing gratitude for our Veterans.
