WoodmenLife member1 Angela Hunt of Gleason, TN, didn’t see it coming when her son, Price, went off to camp one summer: He caught the kayaking bug. Soon enough, though, she would catch it, too, and they would discover a great way to stay active as a family.
It started when Price, 16, went to a Junior Ranger program at Paris Landing State Park on Kentucky Lake in Tennessee. It rained the day that campers were supposed to kayak, so the activity was canceled. But Hunt knew a ranger at the park who invited the family to come out and give the boats a try.
Hunt, 47, was not onboard then, so it was her husband, Jason, who became Price’s first kayaking partner.
“I said, ‘You guys can do it,’” she laughed. “There was no way I was getting into that thing.”
Jason and Price paddled their way to father-son bonding and sharing a love of being outside. In time, Jason knew Hunt was missing out, so he did his best to convince her to give it a try.
Finally, she did. And she was hooked.
“Now, I think I drive Price crazy,” Hunt smiled. “We’ve gone the last three weekends in a row. It’s all his fault, though. Him and his Junior Ranger program.”
Her newfound love of kayaking gave Hunt and Price something to hold onto when their lives were turned upside down by Jason’s passing in 2021. Not only were they staying active as a family, but they were also supporting one another during a terrible time.
Camping and enjoying the outdoors in places like Paris Landing bring Hunt and Price peace. They can find moments to relax and spend quality time together.
Among the things Angela Hunt and her son, Price, enjoy doing together are cooking and kayaking. With her life insurance coverage, Hunt wants to protect Price and make things as easy as possible for him should something happen to her.
Staying active as a family is one important way Hunt protects her family. But she also recognizes the importance of protecting her family’s financial future with life insurance. She knew that even before Jason passed away.
“We thought it was necessary,” Hunt said, “even if it’s a small amount to take care of your final expenses.”
She was satisfied with term life coverage, but her perspective changed after Jason’s passing. She didn’t want to outlive her coverage and leave a headache for Price.
“People are living longer,” Hunt said. “If my coverage would run out, what’s my son going to do? What if I have medical bills when I pass away? He’s going to have to deal with that.
“Yes, permanent insurance can be more expensive, but I see it as money well spent.”
Converting her term life insurance was not something Hunt took lightly. She wanted an expert to help her through the process, so she turned to Financial Representative Kenneth Coker of nearby Dresden, TN, who has been her WoodmenLife Representative for years.
“Kenneth is patient with me,” said Hunt, who is an office assistant at a real estate firm. “I like things made simple. He took the time to explain permanent insurance to me.”
Hunt’s term certificate provided coverage for a specific period of time. Coker explained that converting her certificate was easy and could be done without a medical examination up until age 72. But the younger she was when she converted, the less her permanent life insurance certificate would likely cost.
Plus, he assured Hunt that the whole life insurance certificate she converted to came with guarantees:
Like any mother, Hunt wants to protect her child and make things as easy as possible for him. When it comes to her last days, she knows converting to whole life insurance has made that possible.
In the meantime, though, she will be staying active as family with Price somewhere on a lake in Tennessee.
