Life's Challenges

This time of the year is special. You can’t wait to see family and friends, savor the delicious food, and enjoy the smiles, hugs, and conversations.

Amid all the joy, it’s easy to forget about the dangers of the world and let your guard down. However, you must remain vigilant and make appropriate plans to protect your privacy during the holidays.

At WoodmenLife, we’re here to help families protect their financial future. As the holidays call, we want you to be able to be present. With a little preparation, you’ll be carefree and ready to open your presents.

Protect Your Privacy During the Holidays

Rob LaMagna-Reiter, Vice President & Chief Information Security Officer at WoodmenLife, oversees our efforts to protect both our data and yours. Throughout the year, he offers advice on how to guard against fraud and identity theft.

“It’s natural to get caught up in the excitement of seeing family and making the most of the season,” he said. “But while you’re packing your bags and planning your itinerary, don’t forget to pack something just as important: a plan to protect your finances and personal information.

“WoodmenLife is committed to helping our members safeguard what matters most, including your financial well-being. Whether you’re heading across the country or the next town over, understanding the unique risks that come with travel can help you stay secure and stress-free.”

Why Holiday Travel Increases Financial Risk

When you’re home, you benefit from trusted service providers and familiar routines. Travel, however, places you in unfamiliar surroundings. You could stand out. Scammers are constantly evolving, and travelers are prime targets.

Still, with a few smart habits, you can help protect yourself.

Secure Your Devices

  • Keep your phone, tablet, and laptop updated with the latest software.
  • Use strong passcodes and enable biometric locks.
  • Back up your data before you leave.
  • Turn on remote wipe capabilities (stolen device protection) in case your device is lost or stolen.
  • Consider a temporary, prepaid SIM or “burner” device if you’re traveling overseas.

Be Scam-Savvy

  • Watch out for fake rentals, like too-good-to-be-true listings or requests for payment outside trusted platforms.
  • Beware of transportation cons, like overpriced rides, fake drivers, or rigged meters.

Financial Safety

  • Use ATMs and payment terminals in secure, well-lit areas.
  • Cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
  • Check for tampering, like loose parts or unusual attachments.
  • Monitor your accounts regularly for suspicious activity.

Be Skeptical of Charging Stations

  • Use a power-only USB cable, instead of using a public charging station.
  • Carry a portable charger.
  • Plug into a wall outlet with your own adapter.
  • Disable data transfer when connecting via USB.

Be Proactive

Your holiday travel should be about making memories — not being victimized by fraud. By staying informed and taking a few proactive steps, you can enjoy the season with confidence, knowing your finances and personal data are protected.

From all of us at WoodmenLife, we wish you a happy — and safe — holiday season. For more information about WoodmenLife and how we can help protect your financial future, visit WoodmenLife.org.
