Measuring Up: WoodmenLife Chapter Donates 800 Presidential Rulers to Students

Hundreds of Williamson County School District second-grade students received free presidential rulers after a donation from WoodmenLife Chapter 50 in Carbondale, IL.

Supporting Local Schools

Chapter 50 members wanted to support local schools, which led to their donation of 800 presidential rulers — an annual tradition that grew to new heights — as well as classroom flags.

Chapter 50 Secretary Annamaria Farris is proud that her parents have been WoodmenLife members for 74 years. She herself has a 100% WoodmenLife family, which means every person in her family is a WoodmenLife member.

“I have been a part of WoodmenLife since I was born,” Farris said. “My mom would take me to WoodmenLife meetings when I was really little, and I always saw it as part of my life.”

For the last 16 years, Chapter 50 members have been giving out presidential rulers to second graders in their hometown. However, last year, they made the decision to expand the project and give presidential rulers to every second-grade student in the Williamson County School District.

Along with the presidential ruler, the chapter gave each student a flag handbook and a 3-inch-by-5-inch flag to students who asked for one.

Illinois Chapter 50 donated 800 presidential rulers to the Williamson County School District to help second graders, like Madesyn, learn about measurement.

Empowering Students

The goal is to help the students with their school year because learning about measurement is a key focus in second grade.

“It gives them that empowerment, that confidence,” Farris said. “Also, it helps the families and teachers — they don’t have to wonder if every student has a ruler to start learning their measurement skills. They know they are ready. They’re all set.”

Farris looks forward to this project every year and hopes the chapter can make as large or even larger of a donation next year.

Chapter 50 “is committed to helping the community,” Farris said, “and will continue to look for opportunities to support and make contributions to our community.”
