Innovation and Creative Thinking Set WoodmenLife Associates Apart

Home Office Happenings

We recognize WoodmenLife associates who show innovation by challenging an ineffective process or procedure, or coming up with a new, creative way to do something with an Intrapreneur Award. A record number of associates were nominated for this award in the third quarter.

Out of 30 nominees, three associates rose to the top of the list for their innovative ideas: Janelle Bosan and Janaun Spiller (Customer Service Support) and Jim Haase (Network Support).

Improved Training and Retention

Janelle Bosan and Janaun Spiller were nominated because they determined how to improve retention of new associates in the Customer Service Department. They restructured the new hire training process into two phases, which resulted in lower turnover rates, increased associate engagement and an improvement in service.

Change in Process Leads to Increased Savings

Jim Haase was nominated because he reviewed an equipment and support contract for the entire organization to see if there was a way to stabilize costs, without increasing security or operational risks. His detailed review and research discovered changes that could be made to greatly decrease WoodmenLife’s overall cost for the program.

WoodmenLife is proud to recognize associates like these who exhibit innovative and creative thinking. Now let’s learn a little more about our third quarter Intrapreneur Award recipients.

Janaun Spilller:

What is your job at WoodmenLife? How long have you worked for the organization?

I’m a Production Trainer for Customer Service. I will have my 11-year anniversary with WoodmenLife in April 2018, and this is more than a job to me. It’s a way to make a better life for not only my family, but for those we help every day.

What is your favorite thing about working at WoodmenLife?

Being able to work with new and existing employees. Letting them know it’s okay to be scared about learning something new because we were all new at one time.

How did it feel to receive the third quarter Intrapreneur Award?

Completely amazing and unexpected! I was overwhelmed with joy and appreciation, and I felt like I really made a difference in the organization.

Why do you think it’s important for associates to be innovative and explore new ideas?

We get so used to doing what we do every day just as a habit, but new employees come in with fresh eyes and ideas that we may not have even considered. Thinking outside the box can help make things easier for the next group of individuals.

What WoodmenLife principle do you embrace the most?

The love for its employees. I feel I’m part of a team. I truly feel like family over just someone that works for WoodmenLife.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Sleep or watch “Sponge Bob Square Pants.”

Janelle Bosan:

What is your job at WoodmenLife? How long have you worked for the organization?

I’m a Customer Service Manager, and I’ve been with WoodmenLife for 11 years.

What is your favorite thing about working at WoodmenLife?

I really appreciate the development opportunities and career growth that WoodmenLife has to offer. I’ve benefited from participating in leadership training, our Managers Network, and our mentoring program to continually grow and learn in my roles. I think this is one more way WoodmenLife demonstrates its care for our associates.

How did it feel to receive the third quarter Intrapreneur Award?

I was very surprised and honored to receive this award. It’s the first award I’ve received while working at WoodmenLife.

Why do you think it’s important for associates to be innovative and explore new ideas?

I think it’s very important to explore new ideas to drive overall business growth and improve our bottom line. Also, our innovation can drive process improvements to help us provide even better service to our internal and external customers.

What WoodmenLife principle do you embrace the most?

Relationships. I value the care and respect that WoodmenLife displays to myself as an employee, and how that extends to our customers. It’s great to work for an organization of this size and feel the care and value each day.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to spend time with my family and travel. My preferred destination is anywhere with crystal clear blue water, white sand and some good old sunshine.

Jim Haase:

What is your job at WoodmenLife? How long have you worked for the organization?

I’ve been a Senior Network Engineer on the Network Team for three and a half years. Our department is responsible for all wired/wireless voice and data connectivity, both at our headquarters in Omaha, NE, and in our Regional Offices across the country.

What is your favorite thing about working at WoodmenLife?

The great people who work here. I’ve been a Network Engineer for more than 20 years and have worked for several large companies. What makes WoodmenLife different is the working relationships I have with people from all departments at all levels. In addition, I have the privilege to work in a department with people I consider great co-workers, as well as great friends.

How did it feel to receive the third quarter Intrapreneur Award?

There were a large number of people nominated for this award, all of them very deserving, so I was very surprised and honored when my name was announced.

Why do you think it’s important for associates to be innovative and explore new ideas?

I think it’s important to look for new ways of doing things. A small, simple idea can turn into something big. I would recommend that everyone think about the processes and procedures you do every day. If you have an idea on how to improve that, present it to your manager.

What WoodmenLife principle do you embrace the most?

Our commitment to serve others. WoodmenLife does so much for their employees and the communities they serve. I’m proud to be part of this organization and work alongside people who are committed to our core values and demonstrate it every day.

What do you like to do in your free time?

We do a lot entertaining and cooking (BBQ) at our home, which allows us to spend time with friends and family.
