For a WoodmenLife Chapter in Kentucky, community means everything.
In 1923, a New York Times reporter asked explorer George Mallory why he wanted to climb Mount Everest. He said, “Because it’s there.”
If you ask Chapter 722 in West Liberty, KY, a similar question, you’ll get a similar answer. Why do all the activities in the community that qualify for reward dollars, instead of just the expected one per quarter?
Because they can.
“At one of our meetings, a couple members spoke up and said why do just one?” Michelle Vance, WoodmenLife Representative, says. “We can do all those activities. Actually, we were already doing a few of the events.”
Community Outreach Manager Amanda McNew says their community spirit is built in. “They are a go-getting, community-oriented group. They have pride in their hometown and want to give back.”
In 2012 the community was brought closer when a tornado tore through. WoodmenLife members are leading the way, helping at the local Christ’s Pantry on a monthly basis.
“Being a small community,” Vance says, “we try to make sure our children, seniors and families have activities and events locally.”
Chapter 722 has worked with community leaders to feed seniors and students with the “Pack a Student Snack” (PASS program) and provide school supplies including backpacks for students. They have also teamed up to purchase scoreboards for youth and help fund of building youth soccer league fields.
Chapter Treasurer Cheryl McGraw says the WoodmenLife difference is clear. “I have always been interested in giving back to the community and helping those who are unable to help themselves. And as a consumer, I look for companies who share in this desire when making purchases.”
“Our members know WoodmenLife is more than just an insurance company,” McGraw says. “They know that WoodmenLife invests in our communities, and as a result these members are willing to invest in WoodmenLife.”
When engaging in so many activities, it can be difficult to pick a favorite. One of McGraw’s favorites is the Christmas celebration.
“It’s an opportunity for members to relax during an often stress-filled time. Everyone enjoys the meal and entertainment, and the kids love getting presents from Santa. It’s really nice to see the children all dancing and entertaining the adults, and to see how many adults want their picture taken with Santa!”
Chapter 722 is living out WoodmenLife’s mission of giving back and upholding its commitment to family, community and country. To see all the activities Chapter 722 is doing and to be inspired, visit its calendar page.
