Country

Flag Day is an important occasion in the United States, dedicated to honoring the American flag and its symbolism. It’s a day where we can reflect on the freedoms and patriotism our flag represents.

WoodmenLife’s Commitment to Patriotism

Since our founding in 1890, WoodmenLife has been promoting patriotism and celebrating our American freedoms. WoodmenLife members show their commitment to our country through activities like:

  • Placing flags on the graves of Veterans
  • Holding In Honor and Remembrance ceremonies to mark the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001
  • Recognizing local citizens for their patriotism
  • Organizing flag retirement ceremonies
  • Participating in patriotic events
  • Hosting Celebrating Red, White & Blue® events and displaying American flags at local athletic and community events

Fun Flag Facts

To celebrate Flag Day, here are some interesting facts about the American flag:

  1. The U.S. flag has seen 27 different versions so far, with the number of stars changing with each new state.
  2. The true designer of the first American flag remains a mystery, with conflicting claims attributed to Betsy Ross and Francis Hopkinson.
  3. The U.S. flag was the first flag on the moon, planted by Neil Armstrong. Subsequently, there were five more flags planted during Apollo missions.
  4. Worn-out U.S. flags are retired through special ceremonies, reflecting the respect and honor given to the flag.
  5. The U.S. flag can fly day and night, provided the flagpole and flag are well lit at night.
