Nashville Mounted Patrol Horse Named After Fallen Omaha Officer

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department’s Mounted Patrol has added a new hoofed officer to its ranks, thanks to funding from WoodmenLife.

Honoring WoodmenLife’s commitment to family, community and country, and roots in the Omaha community, this noble horse was named in honor of fallen Omaha Police Department Gang Detective Kerrie Orozco.

Officer Orozco was shot and killed in the line of duty on May 20, 2015, the day she was supposed to bring her 3-month-old daughter home from the hospital and start her maternity leave. She was well-known for supporting Omaha’s youth, including her work as a volunteer coach to several youth teams and the Special Olympics. She co-founded the Omaha Police Officers Ball in 2013 to recognize fellow officers and support the Special Olympics. Officer Orozco was also a horse enthusiast.

Meet Patrol Horse Orozco

Orozco is a 7-year-old Tennessee walking horse from Manchester, Tennessee. He is in the final stages of training and is beginning to go with his colleagues on Nashville’s streets. Orozco is pictured with MNPD Officer Greg Jones.

WoodmenLife delegates and guests attending the 48^th National Convention will have the opportunity to meet Orozco and other MNPD horses at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center on July 25, 2017.
